Silicone, Sealant and Adhesives

Adhesives are a necessary part of modern life. The first evidence of Adhesives use dates back to 4000 BC. Adhesive is essentially a substance that can be used to join two surfaces. The adhesive industry, and chemical products used for bonding or sealing in general, are always inventing and producing new solutions to fulfil a variety of general and specific needs. the range of adhesive applications are wide, they are including versatile adhesives for making student handicrafts Polyurethane foams for filling gaps, heat and sound insulation, cellulose adhesives known as wood glue for usage in wood and paper, transparent and colored silicones known as aquarium glue for sealing and highly specialized metal-based adhesives with capability to apply in machinery. Automotive, aerospace, oil and petrochemical, steel industry, wood and paper industries, ceramics and tiles are just a few of the industries which use this product.

Different adhesives have a variety of properties depending on their needs and conditions, such as flexibility, hardness, hardening time, and temperature, moisture, physical, and chemical resistance.

After successfully cooperating with global brands in adhesive industry (such as: BISON, TKK and Henkel), CB Iran as a group company of Abzarsara, entered in the field of chemical products with this company for the purpose of producing world-class quality ABZ products, it established itself in market as a new hub for manufacturing of industrial chemical products. In silicone adhesives sealant market, ABZ is a well-known brand.

Adhesives group classification

Wood glue, paper glue, metal glue, ceramic glue, plastic glue, and so on are types of adhesives. Based on their physical shape, adhesives are classified as liquid adhesive glue, multi-purpose liquid glue, adhesive tape, and etc. Depending on the applications, adhesives are categorized into two types: structural adhesives and non-structural adhesives. Structural adhesives are adhesives that are used to join the components of structures which are under high forces, and their function is to hold the surfaces together and make resistance to the (tensile, compression, shearing) forces applied to the junction surfaces. Unstructured adhesives are materials that cause adhesive bonding to be weak. Non-structural adhesives do not cure or stable, and bonded surfaces can easily separate when under the weak forces. Labels, packaging, stick wallpaper and flooring, sealing, plastering, and preventing the penetration of gases and the like all require these adhesives.

Among the most extensively used products of adhesive group, the following can be mentioned:

  • Silicones
  • Polyurethane
  • Mastic

Silicone adhesive

Silicone adhesive sealant (Silicone) is a type of adhesive which is often known as an aquarium in market for gluing glass or sealing and has a sealing features.

Silicone adhesive`s main characteristics (aquarium adhesive):

Silicone adhesive, also known as aquarium adhesive, is one of the most extensively used industrial adhesives. This issue has made it water resistant, and it is utilized in a variety of applications due to its chemical and heating durability. Silicone adhesive is resistant to ambient air and moisture, as well as low and high temperatures, hot and humid conditions. Due to their excellent resistance to unfavorable weather conditions, silicone adhesives can be used in open spaces. These adhesives are anti fungal and have capability to glue aluminum, tile, steel, ceramic, glass, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). These adhesives are thermally insulating, acoustically insulating, and non-conductive, as well as UV (ultraviolet) resistant.

Types of silicone adhesives

Silicone adhesive is divided into two types: Acetoxy and Neutral.

When dried, Acetoxy silicone release lactic acid and emit a pungent, vinegar-like odor and have a variety of colors. In comparison to other categories, neutral silicone offer a high level of resistance and durability, as well as being odorless and UV resistant.

Polyurethane Adhesive

PU or PUR stands for polyurethane adhesive. Polyurethane adhesive is a polymer composed from organic chain units bonded to urethane or Carbamates, rather than a single-component substance with a fixed composition. Polyurethane-based adhesives have the ability to be both solid and rather rigid, as well as elastic and flexible. Polyurethane adhesive can be used to insulate doors and windows, glass facades, car windows, room doors, anti-theft, and etc. Polyurethane adhesive is a flexible adhesive with no brittleness and a long service life that has capability to be sanded and painted.

Mastic Adhesives

For sealing, mastic adhesives are often use. Bitumen Mastic (hot and cold), polyurethane mastic, silicone mastic, acrylic mastic, Polysulfide mastic, and etc… are variety types of m\Mastic.Mastic are used to seal water and sewage canals, water and sewage tanks, or flooring, as well as to seal irrigation channels. Some Mastic have properties such as resistance to petroleum products and some others are used to repair asphalt cracks. Another type of mastic is utilized for window sealing or light applications.

Effects and Properties:

Extremely strong adhesion to a wide range of building materials, including concrete, stone, metals, and… Extreme heat and frost flexibility, Resistant to the effects of the environment Sunlight-resistant, Resistant to the environmental factors, Sunlight-resistant, ability to paint with a variety of solvent or water-soluble paints, Non-toxic, non-shrinkable, and can be used in contact with drinking water.
